✌️Peace, Love & Less Single-Use Plastic🚰

Thanks to the good folks at Beyond Plastics New Paltz, NY, the Bethel Woods Center for the Arts (home of the original Woodstock Festival) is on a path to a greener way of operating. Liz Elkin, one of the group’s members, shared this update below on their successful campaign which included a sign-on letter, social media, and several Zoom meetings with the venue.

PROTIP: If you’d like to try your hand at creating and circulating a sign-on letter, check out our handy step-by-step guide here.

In October of 2022, we launched a campaign to encourage Bethel Woods Center for the Arts to stop contributing to the crisis of plastic pollution by ending its wasteful policy prohibiting the use of reusable water bottles at its events.

We are thrilled to report that in response to our campaign, Bethel Woods has revised its Reusable Bottle Policy, which now allows each guest to bring in an empty, reusable, non-metal/non-aluminum water bottle (of 32 oz or less).✌️

To make this change meaningful, the venue has installed a new water refilling station in the museum and will be adding another water filling station in the pavilion later this spring.💧💧

In addition, Bethel Woods will also offer water sold in aluminum cans as an alternative to single-use plastic water bottles. Unlike plastic bottles, aluminum cans are infinitely recyclable and have a high recycling rate. While canned water may not be the most cost-effective option, we applaud Bethel Woods' efforts to research and push suppliers to offer more sustainable alternatives.

We are grateful to Bethel Woods for taking our campaign seriously and implementing these important changes. We believe that their actions will contribute to a cleaner and more sustainable future, and we are proud to have played a role in this positive outcome.

But most of all we are grateful to all of you grassroots advocates who signed our letter and supported this campaign.🙏Your voices helped to amplify the call for change at Bethel Woods and the result is this excellent progress.📣Together, we can accomplish anything!✊ Let's hear it for peace, love, and refillable water bottles.✌️❤️🚰
